Are Bridges or Implants Better?

by Precision Dental Care and Sleep Solutions STL | Mar 12, 2025 | Dental Implants, General Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry

Are Bridges or Implants Better

Losing teeth can significantly impact not only your mouth and comfort but also your self-confidence. When considering a solution for missing teeth, it is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each option before making a decision. Let’s discuss the question, “Are bridges or implants better?”

Pros and Cons of Dental Implants

A dental implant is usually made of titanium and, as its name suggests, is implanted into the jaw, similar to the roots of your natural teeth. Several weeks after the implant is installed, new bone typically grows around it to secure it, and then a crown is attached to the top of the implant, resembling a natural tooth.

A couple of big advantages of dental implants are that they don’t add stress to the surrounding teeth, and they can help maintain the bone structure of the jaw and the gums. An implant should be expected to last a lifetime.

The main disadvantage is that implants can be costly. They also usually require oral surgery and multiple procedures, typically spanning a few weeks, before the process is complete.

Pros and Cons of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are typically installed by attaching to the teeth on either side of a gap in the mouth and require a less invasive procedure. They can be much more cost-effective than implants.

The disadvantages of dental bridges are that they do not help maintain the structure of the jawbone or surrounding tissue and can put extra stress on the surrounding teeth. This can mean that they don’t typically last as long as implants do and can lead to further deterioration and tooth loss.

Is It Covered by Insurance?

One deciding factor when considering the question “Are bridges or implants better?” for yourself may be to find out what your insurance covers and what it may not. Many insurance plans consider one or both procedures to be elective, so be sure to check with your insurance before proceeding with any procedure to ensure that there won’t be any surprises about what you might be paying out of pocket.

Which One is Right for You?

Are bridges or implants better for you? Only you can decide which one is the best fit for your needs and budget, but it can be helpful to talk with your dentist about the options available to you and how each might work with your particular situation. Your dentist will be able to give you more specific information related to what you might need, as well as the big picture of your dental health, to help you achieve the best outcome now and in the future.

Call our Imperial Dental Office to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic and improve your oral health.
