Top Tips for Maintaining Your Custom Dental Crown for Long-Lasting Durability

by Precision Dental Care and Sleep Solutions STL | Jan 27, 2026 | Restorative Dentistry

Dental Crowns In Imperial

Getting a custom dental crown is an important step toward restoring the strength, function, and appearance of your smile. It’s natural to want your crown to last as long as possible—after all, it’s an investment in your oral health. With the right care and daily habits, your crown can remain strong and natural-looking for many years.

Patients choosing Dental Crowns in Imperial often ask how to protect their restorations long-term. Below, we share practical tips to help you maintain your dental crown and keep your smile healthy.

Why Proper Crown Care Matters

Dental crowns are designed to protect weakened or damaged teeth, restore chewing function, and enhance your smile’s appearance. While crowns are durable, they still require consistent care. Everyday habits—such as what you eat or how you clean your teeth—can directly impact how long your crown lasts.

With proper maintenance, dental crowns commonly last 10–15 years or longer, making daily care essential.

6 Effective Tips to Care for Your Dental Crown

1. Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene – Good oral hygiene is the foundation of crown care. Plaque and bacteria can still build up around the crown and along the gumline, potentially leading to decay or gum disease.

  • Brush at least twice daily using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss carefully around the crown every day.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash to support gum health. Keeping your surrounding teeth and gums healthy helps protect your crown as well.

2. Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods – Although crowns are strong, chewing on hard foods like ice, hard candies, or nuts can cause cracks or chips. Sticky foods such as caramel or chewing gum may loosen the crown over time. Choosing softer foods and avoiding excessive force on your crown can prevent unnecessary damage.

3. Never Use Your Teeth as Tools – Using your teeth to open packages, bottles, or containers can damage both your natural teeth and your crown. This habit significantly increases the risk of cracks or crown failure. Always use proper tools instead of your teeth to avoid costly repairs.

4. Wear a Mouthguard When Needed – If you participate in sports or grind your teeth at night, a mouthguard is highly recommended. Sudden impacts or constant grinding pressure can wear down or fracture a crown. A custom mouthguard can protect your dental work and help preserve your smile.

5. Schedule Regular Dental Checkups – Routine dental visits allow your dentist to monitor the condition of your crown and surrounding teeth. Early detection of wear, loosening, or gum issues can prevent more serious problems. Professional cleanings also help remove plaque buildup that brushing alone may miss.

6. Address Teeth Grinding (Bruxism) – Teeth grinding places excessive pressure on dental crowns and can shorten their lifespan. If you grind your teeth—especially during sleep—a custom nightguard can help protect both your crown and natural teeth. Managing bruxism early supports long-term oral health and comfort.

Keep Your Crown Strong for Years to Come

Caring for your dental crown doesn’t require major lifestyle changes—just consistency and awareness. By maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding harmful habits, and visiting your dentist regularly, you can significantly extend the life of your restoration.
