Why Does My Jaw Hurt?

Don’t let jaw discomfort ruin your fun! If you’ve been wondering “Why does my jaw hurt?” we have some tips that may help. You shouldn’t have to suffer from jaw discomfort any longer. We’re here to help you get back to enjoying the food and activities you love.

Are You Stressed?

For many people asking the question, “Why does my jaw hurt?” the answer turns out to be a simple one: stress. While it may be a simple answer, learning how to combat stress can be difficult. You need resources, time, and support to bring your mind and body back to a place of calm, comfort, and health.

If stress is a contributing factor to your jaw discomfort, your dentist may recommend that you try practicing activities to help reduce stress. Suggestions might include yoga, meditation, mindfulness techniques, anti-anxiety medication, regular exercise, massage, or therapy.

Are You Eating Extra Chewy Foods?

Chewing gum regularly or eating foods like bagels, french bread, or taffy can make your jaw tired and sore from being overworked. If your jaw has been feeling extra tender or stiff lately, try taking a few days off from eating extra chewy foods to see if it provides relief.

Do You Have TMD or TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorders can cause discomfort in the jaw and surrounding areas such as the ear and face. Common symptoms include discomfort or locking in one or both jaw joints, discomfort when chewing, and a clicking sound or grinding feeling when chewing or opening and closing your mouth.

The good news is that this condition is usually temporary and can be treated at-home with advice from your dentist. If your condition is causing extensive discomfort, your dentist may prescribe physical therapy exercises for your jaw or massage therapy.

When to See Your Dentist

If you’ve been asking, “Why does my jaw hurt?” it’s time to make an appointment to visit your dentist. It’s important to have a thorough exam to rule out any more serious causes of jaw discomfort. Your dentist can help by diagnosing the source of the issue so that you can be sure you are moving forward with the correct treatment plan in order to ensure quick, effective, and lasting relief.

Call our Imperial Dental Office, to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.
